Bear Enters Home Foraging for Food and Plays Piano

  • 4 June 2017

The Vail Police Department has confirmed taking a report of a bear disturbance at a residence in the 4000 block of Meadow Drive in East Vail which is circulating on social media.

The department was called during the afternoon of May 31 after the occupant discovered the residence had been disturbed while she was away. The initial call was a reported burglary. Upon inspection, the responding officer surmised a black bear had been foraging for food after entering the home through an open kitchen window. While inside, the bear did minor damage to the apartment and took food from a freezer. It was unknown at the time what kind of animal was responsible, but there were indications that the culprit was a bear.

Following the report to police, the resident checked her internal camera system, which captured the event on video. The bear was seen wandering around the apartment and at one point went to a piano putting its paws on the keys playing a few notes. The chords captured on video were unbearable and the tune was equally grizzly, according to police. Although officers searched the area, the suspect is still at large.

Encounters with wildlife are not new in the Vail area, but thanks to local ordinances they are much less common. No reports of violent interactions with animals have occurred within the Town of Vail in recent years. The Vail Police department receives training to deal with these calls and partners with the Colorado Department of Parks and Wildlife to respond when animals need to be relocated. A resource for bear interactions and videos on how to bear proof your home can be found on a web page maintained by Colorado Parks and Wildlife under the following link, http://www.cpw.state.co.us/learn/Pages/LivingwithWildlifeWildBears.aspx .
