Vail Underpass Frontage Road Detours Pushed to May 1 Due to Weather

Based on inclement weather forecast for the next few days, the I-70 Vail Underpass project team is delaying the implementation of the Frontage Road one-way detours. These detours are now anticipated to go into effect the week of May 1.

Work to reconfigure the Frontage Roads to their one-way only alignment requires several days of good weather to safely move barrier, pave and restripe the lanes. In the interest of properly completing the detours and ensuring the safety of the project team and traveling public, project contractors will wait for a clear forecast.

“We never like to make late schedule changes, but in the interest of public safety, it’s best to not rush the implementation of the frontage road detours,” said Matt Figgs, CDOT Project Engineer. “These detours will need to reliably and safely transport Frontage Road traffic through the end of the project this fall. It’s imperative we take our time to ensure the Frontage Road detours are ready to accommodate the increased summer traffic.”  [Listen to an interview with Figgs by KZYR Radio]

Once implemented, the Frontage Road traffic flow will mirror that of I-70 with the North Frontage Road serving westbound drivers only from Lion's Ridge Loop to Timber Ridge and the South Frontage Road serving eastbound drivers only from Cascade Resort/Hotel Talisa to Cascade Crossing. Outside the project work zone, the Frontage Roads will accommodate two-way travel between the West Vail and Vail Town Center interchanges. Frontage Road drivers who are traveling in the opposite direction of these one-way sections will be able to turn around or use alternate routes along I-70 or the opposite Frontage Road to reach their destination.
