- OPEN HOUSE FOR FORD PARK PROJECTS

A progress report on voter-approved improvements to Ford Park will be presented during an open house from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7 in the Vail Municipal Building. Following approval of a ballot question in November to reallocate funds to projects at Ford Park and the Vail Golf Course, plans and design sketches have been prepared to present to the community for review and comment.
- MUNICIPAL SITE REDEVELOPMENT UPDATE

Plans for redevelopment of the Town of Vail municipal site will be reviewed during the Tuesday, Feb. 7 Vail Town Council work session which begins at 2 p.m. The discussion is listed third on the agenda and includes review of a budget estimate of $13 to $15 million for the design and construction of a new municipal building, as well as shared infrastructure costs and relocation expenses.
- DESIGN RFP FOR MUNICIPAL OFFICE BLDG

The Town of Vail is seeking proposals from qualified architectural teams for design services related to construction of a new municipal office building at 75 S. Frontage Rd. The project will include confirming and advancing the current schematic design for the new municipal offices and a partial interior remodel and exterior alteration of the existing police department wing. The selected architectural team will be responsible for preliminary design, design development, design approval and entitlement, construction documents and construction administration.
- UPDATE ON GONDOLA APPROVAL

An update on administrative approval of an application to replace the existing Vista Bahn chairlift with a new gondola on Vail Mountain will take place at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 30 during the Vail Planning and Environmental Commission (PEC) meeting. Planners from the Community Development Department will provide an overview of the approved amendment to an existing conditional use permit that allows for the new gondola. In accordance with the town’s zoning regulations, an amendment to a conditional use permit can be approved administratively upon the finding that the proposed change does not alter the basic intent and character of the use. In this instance, a chairlift has been approved to be replaced by a new gondola lift.
- MORE PILE BURNING PLANNED

Crews from Vail Fire and Emergency Services will conduct more pile burn operations either Tuesday, Jan. 31 or Wednesday, Feb. 1 beginning at 10 a.m. if conditions permit. About 10 to 15 slash piles in the Buffer Creek area in the Valley neighborhood will be burned. This follows an earlier burn on Jan. 18 in which 10 piles were burned.
- "DOC" SELECTED FOR ONE VALLEY CAMPAIGN

Organizers of the One Book, One Valley reading campaign have selected “Doc,” by Mary Doria Russell as the project’s first title. The One Book, One Valley initiative is a collaborative with the Town of Vail Public Library, Eagle Valley Library District, Colorado Mountain College’s Edwards campus and The Bookworm of Edwards. The purpose of the collaborative is to encourage literacy and shared enjoyment of reading throughout Eagle County.
- TYPICAL AVERAGES FOR CONSTRUCTION

The Town of Vail Community Development Department issued 686 building permits with a total valuation of $59.9 million in 2011. This is about half the number of permits issued during the highest year in Vail's history, 2007. While 2004 to 2008 saw peak activity, Vail has been trending toward more typical averages in building permits and valuation over the past three years.

One Book, One Valley is a collaborative effort by The Bookworm of Edwards, Colorado Mountain College, Eagle Valley Library District and the Town of Vail Public Library. The goal of these organizations is to promote a sense of community by sharing a common topic for conversation, and to encourage the value and fun of reading together.
- EAST VAIL VEHICLE PLACARDS

To improve winter access to East Vail neighborhoods, vehicle placards will again be available this season for use during Interstate 70 closures. By displaying the vehicle access placard, those who regularly travel to and from neighborhoods east of Aspen Lane will be directed through an eastbound checkpoint on the South Frontage Road for immediate access to their neighborhood. All remaining traffic will be directed to park in the Vail Village and Lionshead structures as well as Ford Park until I-70 is reopened.

The Vail Town Council has accepted the terms of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Vail Valley Medical Center and the Steadman Clinic - a significant step in efforts to redevelop the western two thirds of the municipal site. While non-binding, the MOU, which was reviewed at the Jan. 17 Town Council meeting, outlines specifics of the project and forms the basis for next steps.
- VAIL HONORS CITIZEN HEROES

A husband and wife from West Vail and an Eagle resident were honored as recipients of the “Citizen Hero Award” by Vail’s fire chief during the Jan. 17 Town Council meeting. The recipients, Mike and Emily Kloser and Jay Lucas, were recognized for risking their personal safety during a structure fire in the West Vail neighborhood on June 9 last year. They were each presented with a plaque by Chief Mark Miller who thanked them for their bravery that day.
- LIVE WEB STREAMING OF COUNCIL MEETINGS

The towns of Vail and Avon, in partnership with Public Access TV 5, will begin live web streaming of their respective council meetings this month. The new technology will debut Tuesday, Jan. 17 during the afternoon and evening sessions of the Vail Town Council and on Tuesday, Jan. 24 when the Avon Town Council convenes for its regular meetings.

Celebrating the spirit of Vail, newly designed roundabout banners are now in place. A variety of 15 images capturing families skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, snowshoeing, powder skiing, landmark buildings and structures, and breathtaking Rocky Mountain bluebird days were chosen for the new banners.
