  • VAIL PASS BIKE PATH DELAYS COMING

    Sand removal operations will stop traffic on the Vail Pass recreation path following the Labor Day holiday. Beginning Sept. 7 and continuing through Sept. 9, flaggers will be stopping bicyclists at various locations along the upper five-mile segment of the path, on the west side of Vail Pass. Work is scheduled each day from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weather permitting.

  • OPENING ON SPECIAL EVENTS COMMISSION

    The Town of Vail is seeking applications from community members to fill a mid-term vacancy on the Vail Commission on Special Events (CSE). Applications are due to the town by 5 p.m. Sept. 21. Applicants must be a resident, property owner, business owner, or employee within the Town of Vail. The Vail Town Council will conduct interviews during its work session on Oct. 5, with appointments to follow at its evening meeting.

    Recommendations for Vail’s winter parking rates and policies for the 2010/11 winter season will return to the Town Council for ratification on Sept. 7. The parking discussion is listed sixth on the meeting agenda which begins at 6 p.m. in the Vail Town Council Chambers, 75 S. Frontage Rd. Public comments are encouraged.

    After a summer break, the Town of Vail will resume hosting weekly construction meetings beginning at 9 a.m. Sept. 7 in the Vail Public Library community room and continuing each Tuesday at 9 a.m. through Nov. 15.

    Town of Vail Municipal offices will be closed on Monday in observance of Labor Day. The Town of Vail Public Library also will be closed. Regular office hours will resume on Sept. 7. Transit services will operate uninterrupted during the holiday. Call 911 for police, fire or medical emergencies.

  • 2ND QUARTER CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITY UP

    Second quarter construction activity in Vail is showing signs of growth compared to the previous year, according to figures released by the Community Development Department. Building valuation totaled $27 million during April, May and June this year, compared to $16.3 million during the same period in 2009, a 65 percent increase. For the first six months of the year, building valuation totaled $33.5 million this year, compared to $21 million a year ago. Vail’s record year for valuation was $497 million in 2007.

  • GOURMET ON GORE WINS TOV AWARD

    Gourmet on Gore, an open-air tasting of wine, beer and spirits and the finest food in the Vail Valley, is being honored by the Town of Vail with the second Sustainable Special Event Award for outstanding efforts to host an environmentally conscious event. The award is part of the Town of Vail’s new “Celebrate Green!” program that requires all event producers to complete a points-based checklist to ensure compliance with a minimum number of sustainable practices, but additional points are awarded to those who go above and beyond to reduce waste, encourage public transportation and reduce their carbon footprint.

  • GALLEGOS MEMORIAL PARKING

    The Town of Vail is asking community members who plan to attend the Gerald Gallegos memorial service at the Ford Amphitheater Saturday to park in the Vail Village parking structure. Shuttle buses will be used to transport attendees to and from the event. The Ford Park lots will be closed to parking throughout the weekend to accommodate the Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge.

  • TIMBER RIDGE MOVING AHEAD

    The Timber Ridge redevelopment project has received final approvals from the town's Planning & Environmental Commission (PEC) and the Design Review Board (DRB). Next steps in the development review process are for the developer, Vail Timber Ridge LLC, to begin addressing and responding to the various conditions of approvals placed on the project.

  • TREE RELOCATION CONTINUES TODAY

    A 50 foot tall spruce tree weighing approximately 50,000 pounds will be relocated from the LionsHead Transit Center construction site to the Vail golf course on Aug. 24.

    The Town of Vail will host its remaining neighborhood picnic of the summer Aug. 24 at Ellefson Park, 2507 Arosa Dr. in West Vail. The picnic will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and food and drink will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • PLAYGROUND RENOVATION COMMENTS NEEDED

    The Town of Vail and Eagle County Schools are seeking public comment on a proposal to renovate the playground at Red Sandstone Elementary School. The two organizations are applying for a grant from Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) to complete the project. GOCO is the lottery funded mechanism for recreation grants.

  • FREE FIREWOOD FOR LIMITED TIME

    Free firewood is available in the Intermountain neighborhood for a limited time this week as wildland crews from the Vail Fire Department work to remove dead and diseased trees in partnership with Holy Cross Energy. The firewood has been cut into manageable links and is available for loading from 5 p.m. to dusk today, Tuesday and Wednesday this week in the 3000 block of Bellflower Drive. The use of chain saws at the loading site is prohibited.

  • 2011 SPECIAL EVENT FUNDING APPLICATIONS

    The Town of Vail's Commission on Special Events (CSE) is currently accepting funding requests from special event producers for 2011 events occurring in Vail.   • VAIL TO CONSIDER ISSUING BONDS

    The Vail Town Council, acting as the Vail Reinvestment Authority, will consider a staff recommendation to issue 20-year tax increment financing (TIF) bonds during a meeting of the Vail Reinvestment Authority at 1 p.m. Aug. 17. The meeting will be held in the Vail Town Council Chambers, 75 S. Frontage Rd.

  • SOLE POWER CHALLENGE UNDERWAY

    The Town of Vail, Vail Recreation District and ECO Trails are challenging the Eagle Valley Community to use non-motorized transportation as part of a new green commuting challenge underway through Oct. 15. The new “Sole Power” challenge will log participants’ daily activity via biking, running, walking – even skating - while calculating the calories burned, gas money saved and carbon dioxide emissions eliminated.

  • COMMUNITY GARDEN PROJECT EXPLORED

    The Town of Vail wants to know if there’s interest in pursuing a community garden project in the Intermountain neighborhood in West Vail. Potential gardeners are asked to contact Kristen Bertuglia, the town’s environmental sustainability coordinator, if they’re interested in pursuing the project. Bertuglia is prepared to facilitate the renewed effort if the level of community participation is feasible.

  • STEELROOTS SCULPTURES ON LOAN

    Currently on extended loan to the Town of Vail are two monumental sculptures depicting the stylized root systems of trees by internationally renowned artist Steve Tobin. The “Steelroots” sculptures that transform the way we look at trees and nature can be viewed in Ford Park and LionsHead. The work in Ford Park will be relocated to the Village in October.

  • TREE RELOCATION UNDERWAY IN LIONSHEAD

    In preparation for construction of the first phase of the LionsHead Transit Center, the Town of Vail has arranged to relocate ten spruce trees from the construction site which is located on the north side of the parking garage. Work will begin Wednesday (Aug. 4) and will take three to four days to complete.

    The Vail Town Council has tabled a resolution expressing support for specific areas of the Hidden Gems wilderness proposal to Sept. 21 following concerns expressed by local water boards.

  • STATE BALLOT ISSUES OPPOSED BY COUNCIL

    The Town Council has unanimously approved a resolution in opposition of three Colorado ballot issues it says will be devastating for the town if approved in November. According the evidence and testimony presented at the public hearing on July 6, Proposition 101 and Amendments 60 and 61 have the potential to create an annual revenue shortfall to the town of over $5 million by 2013 if passed.
