At about 8:12 p.m. on Friday, July 10, a lightning strike ignited a small wildfire on U.S. Forest Service land above the Potato Patch neighborhood in Vail as a storm moved through the area. Captain Craig Davis of Vail Fire & Emergency Services says the affected area is less than an acre and no structures are threatened.
Responders will be monitoring the area overnight; then beginning at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, crews from Vail Fire and the U.S. Forest Service will hike into the area for an assessment and to initiate any necessary activities to make sure the fire is out. Expect to see a small amount of smoke. Update: Fire is contained as of Saturday morning and is limited to a single tree.
Also assisting on Friday was a crew from the Eagle River Fire Protection District.
