The Vail and Avon Police Departments are offering free tire tread checks to help motorists determine If their tires are currently safe for winter driving. If new tires are needed, coupons are available for discounts from participating tire stores in Eagle, Summit, Garfield and Pitkin counties which are redeemable until March 2016.
Motor vehicles in Colorado are required to have a tire tread depth of more than 1/8” measured in any two tread grooves at three locations equally spaced around the circumference of the tire.
This winter CDOT will be using the traction and chain laws for passenger cars, when chains are required for commercial trucks. This will require two-wheel drive passenger vehicles to have snow tires, not just all-season mud and snow-rated tires. The safety checks will assist citizens in determining the type of tires they have on their vehicles. For more information, visit codot.gov/library/Brochures/chain-up-tips-for-passenger-vehicles
The safety checks are available from the Vail and Avon police departments between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the stations, where the discount coupons will be available for distribution. The Colorado State Patrol is also assisting with the awareness campaign.
