Phase 2 of the Vail I-70 Underpass project is wrapping up with crews working to return travel on the frontage roads to two-way traffic. Please be advised of the following closures and alignment changes:
I-70 Lane Closure
On Wednesday, Nov. 9, there will be a right lane closure along eastbound I-70 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. while crews move concrete barrier into its winter location.
Upcoming Frontage Road Alignment Changes
On Monday, Nov. 14, crews will be moving barriers and striping the frontage roads, preparing to open the frontage roads to traffic in both directions. On Friday, Nov. 18, the North and South Frontage Roads will return to their normal, two-way alignment with a lane of travel in both the eastbound and westbound directions. Vail Transit will resume West Vail Green service to coincide with this transition. Motorists should be aware that when the North and South Frontage Roads reopen to two-way traffic, the area is still an active construction zone with reduced speed limits.
Pedestrians & Bicyclists
Also beginning Nov. 18, access to the Gore Creek Trail on the east end of the project site adjacent to the Glen Lyon Offices will reopen to pedestrians and bicyclists. Pedestrian sidewalks along the South Frontage Road will be installed during Phase 4 of the project, so pedestrians are advised to use the Gore Creek Trail until then. Along the North Frontage Road, the North Recreation Path will be open in its new at-grade alignment, adjacent to the North Frontage Road.
The area beneath the underpass will remain closed to vehicles and pedestrians throughout the winter and Phase 4 of construction and will open when the project is complete at the end of November 2017.
As always, many construction activities are weather dependent so this schedule is subject to change.
