Gore Creek has been temporarily closed to boating from the Pulis Bridge, located at the intersection of South Frontage Road and Vail Valley Drive, west to the down-stream side of the Covered Bridge effective immediately due to safety hazards associated with repairs to the Covered Bridge in Vail Village. The “full use restriction order” has been enacted by the Vail Police Department, per the Code of Colorado Regulations 2 CCR 405-2 #217 River Use Restrictions.
The Gore Creek restriction applies to all types of water vessels including whitewater canoes, kayaks and commercial rafts as well as air-inflated devices, such as inner tubes, air mattresses and small inflatable rafts. This restriction will remain in place until on or before May 20 upon completion of the Town of Vail’s bridge girder repair project where the use of scaffolding and other construction materials, along with rising water levels, could create a safety hazard. Signs alerting boaters to the closure are being posted at key locations along the creek.
All Gore Creek boaters are permitted to launch their watercraft on the down-stream side of the Covered Bridge via the pocket park on the south side. No other use restrictions are in place on Gore Creek.
The upcoming Vail Whitewater Race Series which begins May 12 will be unaffected by the use restriction. The series will be held on five consecutive Tuesdays through June 9 with racing activities occurring on Gore Creek from the down-stream side of the Covered Bridge to the International Bridge, hosted by the Vail Recreation District, Alpine Quest Sports and the Town of Vail.
