Kids: Help Design New Booth Creek Park Playground on Dec. 2

The Town of Vail is inviting kids to help design the new playground for Booth Creek Park, located at 2900 Manns Ranch Road in East Vail. The kids’ workshop design activity will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 2 at the Grand View on the third level of the Lionshead parking structure. Kids and families of all ages are welcome and encouraged to participate. Parking is free and pizza and drinks will be provided as well as crayons, paper and other supplies to capture the imagination of the participants.

To date, community involvement in the Booth Creek Park redevelopment project has been extensive with neighborhood meetings, site visits, town council discussions and online participation. Project Manager Todd Oppenheimer says convening the local children to collect their input is just one more way to keep the involvement going. He says a similar effort involving local children in the design of the playground at Ford Park in 2000 led to one of the best playgrounds around.

In addition to input from future users, the Booth Creek Park playground elements will have a unique touch. Artist Andy Dufford has been added to the design team upon the recommendation of the Art in Public Places Board. Selected from over 55 artists, Dufford owns Chevo Studios in Denver. He and his team recently completed the Ford Family Tribute at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater in Ford Park. Dufford has been commissioned to provide creative and artistic designs for the playground structures and play features.

The town has also hired the landscape architecture firm Design Workshop to assist in the preparation of construction documents for the park.

The park’s redevelopment is scheduled for a May 2016 construction start. In addition to a new playground, the park will include a double tennis court, picnic shelter, restroom, walkways and on-street parking.
