Last Community Picnic is Tuesday, Aug. 9 at Donovan Pavilion

The Town of Vail will host its remaining neighborhood picnic of the summer on Tuesday, Aug. 9 at Donovan Pavilion. The picnic will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and food and drink will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

Representatives from the public works, community development, library and administration departments will join the Vail Town Council in sponsoring Tuesday’s picnic. Activities will include information on wildfire readiness and a drawing for two free 72-hour emergency preparedness kits from among entries collected at the picnic and a previous gathering on July 12. In addition, information about the town’s upcoming 50th birthday party on Aug. 23 will be provided, plus the library’s new fundraisers will be introduced – 50th birthday coffee and chocolate.

Also featured will be updates on the construction schedule for the I-70 Vail Underpass project as well as discussions with prospective home buyers to help shape the planning for the town’s development of the Chamonix property behind the West Vail Fire Station. In addition, town staff will be on hand with a noxious weed display and information on how to manage invasive species.

In conjunction with the picnic, the police and fire departments will be conducting a voluntary evacuation drill in the nearby Matterhorn and Highland Meadows neighborhoods. Residents of these neighborhoods will be encouraged to participate in the drill and join their neighbors for lunch at the picnic immediately following the exercise.

Now in its 17th year, the picnic series provides residents an opportunity to offer comments and suggestions about community issues to members of the town staff and Vail Town Council. An earlier picnic at Bighorn Park drew hundreds of picnickers.  A recap of citizen comments and responses will be posted on the town’s website at following the event.
