Preliminary work to prepare for construction of Vail’s new permanent skatepark begins this week. Starting Tuesday, Aug. 4, Crews will begin installing construction fencing and related signage at the site. This will be followed by removal of existing surface materials, earthwork and drainage. There will be no impacts to traffic or pedestrian circulation during the site work.
The new skatepark will be built in the vacant space between the two parking decks at the Lionshead parking structure, not far from the temporary skatepark which will remain in use for the remainder of the season.
Following the preliminary site work, construction of the concrete skatepark elements is scheduled to begin on Sept. 4 and will be completed by the middle of November. The contractor is California Skateparks which designed the new facility. The design includes a large variety of street and transition style elements and also includes a signature “vert” feature, mini-bowl and full size half-pipe.
Once in place, the skatepark operations will be managed by the Vail Recreation District with skating opportunities for all ages and abilities.
