Sole Power Challenge Enters Sixth Season

May snow and rain showers bring June flowers and Sole Power. Memorial Day is nearly here and that means time for the annual Sole Power Challenge. Sole Power turns six this season. The first five years of Sole Power have resulted in some impressive numbers. 597 people have logged 22,140 trips or 145,903 miles (over 140,000 lbs. of carbon reduced). The Sole Power Challenge encourages human powered commuting in the Eagle Valley. Participants get outside, get fit, reduce our carbon footprint, save money and have fun while doing it.

The rules are simple, participants may count any "trip" as long as they have a destination and the ride, walk, run is not purely recreational. The goal is to substitute your “sole” power for gasoline power, so if you would have otherwise driven, taken the bus, motorcycle or other motorized vehicle, it counts. The program will run from Memorial Day to Columbus Day with a couple of seasonal challenges within those dates.

This year’s challenge includes prizes, giveaways, discounts at area stores and social events throughout the season. Competition options between local businesses and teams remain a fixture of the program. Sponsorship options are still available for interested businesses; all donations are used as prizes for participants.

This year’s goal is to top 50,000 miles so whether you’re a veteran participant or want to do your first human-powered commute, join in and help meet the goal.
