Trails in Vail Community Workshop Scheduled for Oct. 11

The Town of Vail is sponsoring a “Trails in Vail” community workshop from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11 in the Vail Public Library community room. The workshop is a component of the Comprehensive Opens Lands Plan Update process, which has been gathering public input throughout the year. Community members, hikers, mountain bikers and other outdoor recreationalists are encouraged to attend the session. Light refreshments will be served and free parking is available in the Lionshead parking structure.
The upcoming workshop will build upon themes identified during a series of focus group meetings held in September. Workshop topics will include ideas for improved connections and wayfinding, recommendations for beginner and intermediate hiking and biking trails, hiking-specific trails, wildlife protection, improvements to existing trails and ideas for new trails. The workshop will be presented in an open house format in which members of the public will be invited to review and comment on a draft trails vision, trail ideas and related recommendations.
Community input from the workshop will be used to create a Trails in Vail Concept Plan to be included in the update of the Town of Vail Comprehensive Open Lands Plan. While the trails concept plan will help set the direction for trail planning for many years, multiple levels of approval are required before any new projects can be acted upon. This includes reviews by the Town of Vail Planning and Environmental Commission, Vail Town Council, U.S. Forest Service and Colorado Parks and Wildlife, as well as additional community input.
The draft of the Open Lands Plan Update will be available for public review later this month prior to the Planning and Environmental Commission’s formal review of the plan which will begin on Nov. 13.  An information update to the PEC will be held Oct. 9.
