The Town of Vail, in partnership with the U.S. Census Bureau, would like to remind residents that the 2020 Census is nearing and there are a few things to be aware of before then.
The census is a count of every person living in the entire U.S. It occurs once every ten years, and the mission is to count everyone once, only once, and in the right place, resulting in a complete and accurate survey. The 2020 Census will begin in March 2020.
In preparation, the first major operation of the 2020 Census is about to get underway - Address Canvassing (AdCan). This is U.S. Census Bureau’s process to validate their address database prior to sending out the 2020 Census questionnaires.
AdCan is an on-the-ground operation running from mid-August through mid-October 2019, meaning there will be Census Bureau field staff validating a percentage of U.S. households in person. Field Staff will make an attempt to talk with residents to identify themselves, explain the operation and validate the address; if no one is home, they will validate the address by observation. Census Bureau field staff will have badge IDs – local law enforcement will be contacted prior to the operation with illustrations of those IDs so they can be verified. There will also be a quality control follow-up, so it is possible that some residents may be contacted twice.
For more information about the AdCan operation, visit the CENSUS Blog and/or CENSUS Video link.
