Vail Police Hosting Memorial 5k Run on May 6
The Vail Police Department is hosting a 5k run on May 6 to honor fallen Vail Police Officer Ryan Cunningham. The informal run will take place at 9 a.m. with the start area at Vail Mountain School and finishing at Officer Cunningham’s memorial near the Bighorn trailhead in East Vail. Officer Cunningham made the ultimate sacrifice in the early morning hours of May 6, 2001. At the time, he was survived by his wife and young daughter. Officer Cunningham is the only officer to lose his life in the line of duty with the Vail Police Department.

This run is intended to bring the Vail Police Department and local law enforcement together with the community to honor the sacrifice and service of current, former, and fallen officers, and strengthen the bond between law enforcement and the community. Everyone is encouraged to come out and participate.

This event is organized in conjunction with the Officers Down 5k series, which are held throughout the nation. This race series was created in 2011 by a police officer who wanted to bring the community and law enforcement together for a fun event to interact, and show each other support. Proceeds are donated to various funds for fallen officers nationwide.

This event is a “virtual 5k,” which means people all over the country will be running it in support of law enforcement, wherever they are on May 6.  For more information, or to register, visit Registration is $48 and includes a race t-shirt, bib, metal, and “blue glow accessories.” Registration closes on April 1.

The Town of Vail will provide refreshments and bus service from the finish back to the Vail Mountain School. Vail Mountain School is also providing support for the event while the Vail Recreation District will assist with timing.
