The underpass at the Vail Town Center roundabout interchange will be returned to its original single lane configuration on Thursday, Sept. 22 in preparation for winter operations. The two lane northbound lane configuration worked well for the high volume summer months; however, it will now need to be returned to a single lane northbound lane configuration to allow for safe winter maintenance operations. Workers will be removing signage and striping on Thursday morning, so please use caution in this area.
Traffic volumes have reduced significantly for the fall season and once the winter traffic increases by the beginning of December, the north and south frontage roads will be back to their two-way operating configurations allowing normal traffic patterns to return for the winter season.
The Town of Vail had partnered with the Colorado Department of Transportation to alter the northbound lane at the Vail Town Center interchange which increased capacity through the roundabouts by 30 percent. Engineers are currently assessing an alternative traffic flow for the frontage roads for the final phase of the underpass construction during spring 2017. The underpass project is scheduled to be completed by November 2017.
