Vail Town Clerk Patty McKenny will assume the role of acting town manager effective Wednesday, April 5 as part of a management transition following the departure of Stan Zemler who will be leaving the town’s employment in April.
Zemler, who has served as Vail town manager since October 2003, will be recognized at the Tuesday, April 4 Town Council meeting for his more than 13 years of service. He will continue on in a consulting role for the town until April 14.
As acting town manager, McKenny will be responsible for day-to-day operations while the Town Council completes its search for a new town manager. McKenny has been Vail’s town clerk since 2014 and has more than seven years of management experience with Avon, having served as the director of administrative services from 2007 until 2010 and assistant town manager from 2010 to 2014 as well as acting town manager during 2012. McKenny’s local government career began in 1989 serving mountain resort communities.
Vail Mayor Dave Chapin says McKenny’s presence in the town manager’s office will ensure a smooth transition over the coming weeks. “With this transition in place, we can take the time to focus on the hiring process for Stan’s successor knowing that the town is in an excellent position to keep our priorities moving forward,” he said. “The town organization as a whole continues to amaze me with committed and highly capable employees across all departments and services.”
The town manager search is being coordinated by Strategic Government Resources, a national recruiting firm based in Keller, Texas. The schedule includes announcement of finalists for the position in early April followed by on site interviews which will include a community reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on April 18 at Donovan Pavilion.
Zemler is the town’s sixth manager to serve the community since its incorporation in 1966.
