I-70 Vail Underpass Major Construction Resumes

The I-70 Vail Underpass Project has begun the fourth and final phase of construction. Crews mobilized on site in mid-March for minor work beneath the underpass, major construction activities resume Monday, April 3, involving occasional lane closures on I-70 and minor frontage road delays. Tree Cutting Project along Streamtract

Beginning April 10, multiple contractors will be removing dead and diseased trees along the Gore Creek streamtract between Ford Park and Vail Valley Drive in a concentrated effort to reduce the impacts of spruce beetle. Crews will be working daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. cutting and hauling nearly 70 blue spruce trees along the town-owned property. The trees identified for removal have been determined to be safety hazards for pedestrians and bicyclists or are currently infested with spruce beetle. The affected streamwalk area for this first phase of cutting will be closed to the public during work hours. No other impacts are anticipated and access to the back stairs at the nearby Wren at Vail will be maintained. Town of Vail contact is Gregg Barrie, 970-390-3286.

Free Landscape Workshop to Focus on Best Practices

 Registration is now taking place for a free workshop on sustainable landscaping practices scheduled for Thursday, April 27 in Vail. This free, day-long workshop will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Grand View on the third level of the Lionshead Welcome Center. Sponsored by the Town of Vail, Eagle River Water and Sanitation District and Betty Ford Alpine Gardens, this is the second year for the training and coincides with expanded educational programming identified in the Town of Vail Gore Creek Strategic Action Plan. Landscape contractors, commercial applicators, designers, architects and property managers are encouraged to register in advance to attend. Lunch will be provided as well as free parking. Golden Peak

Tree Cutting Project along Streamtract

Vail Village

Vail Village Transportation Center La Cantina Level Remodel
Beginning April 24, the third level of the Vail Village Transportation Center, including the La Cantina restaurant will be closed for a remodel consisting of new tile, paint and new lockers. Town of Vail contact is John King, 970-376-0949 or 970-479-2170.

Vail Village Transportation Center ECO Transit Office Remodel
Beginning April 24, the ECO Transit office on the fourth level of the Vail Village Transportation Center will close for a remodel of the office. The ECO Transit staff will have a temporary office in the Vail Village Welcome center during this time. Town of Vail contact is John King, 970-376-0949 or 970-479-2170.

Red Lion Inn Condo # 3 Renovation, 304 Bridge Street
This project is schedule to start on April 25 with a completion date of spring of 2018. A crane is required which will necessitate a closure of Bridge Street. These dates have yet to be determined. Contractor will notify all merchants and properties in the area prior to any closure. Work consists of adding 714 square feet to level 1 and level 2 of the unit. Vail Valley Medical Center Phase 1: West Wing, 181 West Meadow Dr.
Construction on the project continues with work contained within the construction fence. This project consists of a new fourth floor and expansions on the south and west sides. All hospital services will remain open and fully functional throughout the construction. To access the Emergency Department, use West Meadow Drive. All other patients and visitors should access the hospital via South Frontage Road West. Phase I is scheduled to be completed in 2017. Contractor is G.E. 303 Gore Creek Drive, Units 11 & 12

Lionshead Village

Lion Square Lodge Exterior Improvements, 660 Lionshead Place
Project includes replacement of the staircase leading from top of embankment to event space on the south side of building, plus new stone path and landscaping improvements. Proposed start date is April 17 with completion by May 26. Contractor is 10th Mountain Builders, Jeff Armistead, 970-471-0618. Town of Vail contact is Leonard Sandoval, 970-390-4677.

The Lion Redevelopment (formerly Strata and Lionshead Inn and Lionshead Annex), 705 W. Lionshead Circle
The Lion has received its Temporary Certificate of Occupancy (TCO). Landscaping and other remaining improvements will be completed in the spring of 2017. Contractor is PCL Construction, Inc. Town of Vail contact is Leonard Sandoval, 970-479-2198.

Outlying

I-70 Vail Underpass Major Construction Resumes
Major construction resumes today, April 3. This week, there will be occasional flagging along the North and South Frontage roads to direct site access. On I-70, there will be alternating right and left lane closures for crews to move barriers and conduct striping work. These alternating I-70 lane closures are expected to occur Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. along westbound I-70, and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. along eastbound I-70. The one-way detours return to the frontage roads on Monday, April 24 — impacts to drivers are no different than what occurred in 2016. Remaining activities include extensive construction of the underpass roundabouts, as well as construction beneath the underpass, including brick pavers, curb and gutters, and lighting elements. In addition, crews will do final restoration work in 2017. The project is scheduled for completion in fall of 2017. East Vail Berm

Expansion of the East Vail berm resumes this spring. Beginning the week of April 3, end dump semi trucks will again be hauling dirt to the East Vail berm site. Access to and from the site will be via Bald Mountain Road. In total, nearly 8,000 cubic yards of dirt will be added to the berm site during the 60 day period from April 3 through the end of May. Chamonix Vail, 2310 Chamonix Road 
Site work, including completion of the deep utilities infrastructure and start of overlot grading and mass excavation, is set to begin the week of April 3.  In addition to construction activity happening on the development site, end dump semi trucks will be coming to and leaving the site regularly. Once the initial site work is completed, vertical construction on the site will begin.  Construction activity will continue through the anticipated completion date of March 31, 2018. Booth Creek Park Redevelopment, 2900 Manns Ranch Road
The remaining work on construction of Booth Creek Park includes completion of the playground and the landscaping. The work on the playground area restarted on March 29 and is expected to be completed by April 30. The landscaping is scheduled to begin on May 1 and be completed around May 15. There will be some on going minor work on the buildings and other portions of the site. The construction fence will continue to encompass the playground area only. Park visitors are welcome to walk through the park but the paths will not be maintained in the winter. The overall project involves a compete redevelopment of the existing park and includes new hard-surface tennis courts, picnic pavilion, restrooms and children’s playground. Donovan Park Picnic Shelter
Construction of a new picnic shelter for Donovan Park continues. Work is contained within a 6-foot high construction fence between the playground and the basketball court. Walkways will continue to be open. The new structure will accommodate three picnic tables and will be completed by the spring of 2017. The contractor is R.A. Nelson. Hotel Talisa (formerly Vail Cascade Resort and Spa) Renovation, 1300 Westhaven Dr.
This $50 million renovation project includes upgrades to guest rooms, restaurant, market, lounge and bar area, new spa and more. The Aria Athletic Club and Spa and Vail Cascade Condominiums will remain open throughout the construction, which is scheduled to be completed in spring of 2017. General Contractors is PWI Construction working on the hotel improvements; Evans Chaffee Construction Group will work on the tennis court conversion. Doubletree Hotel, 2211 North Frontage Road (formally the Holiday Inn)
Work includes renovation of the interior/exterior of the hotel, pool area upgrades and parking lot improvements. Start date was Aug. 15, 2016, completion date scheduled for mid summer 2017. Contact person is Steve Bossart, Widewaters Construction, 970-618-4355.
