Repairs to Lionshead Parking Structure

Expansion joint and structural repairs will take place in the Lionshead parking structure on Monday, Aug. 26 through Friday, Sept. 9. There will be lane and parking space closures. For your safety and the safety of the crew, please avoid entering coned off areas and follow the directional signs. Alternate exiting will be required on some days. Vail Police: Be Bear Aware

The Vail Police Department is reminding contractors to be mindful about bears and other wildlife. Construction sites are required to use bear-proof containers. Be sure to remove all food items from vehicles and keep them locked. Report all bear activity by calling the police department at 970-479-2201.


Here’s a recap of the various construction projects in and around Vail.

Golf Course Neighborhood

Vail Golf & Nordic Clubhouse Renovation, 1775 Sunburst Drive 
Building interior, exterior, site, landscaping, golf course restoration and completion of the parking lot improvements continue. The temporary structures used for the Nordic and Golf operations are scheduled to be removed by the end of September. Restoration of the driving range will follow soon afterwards. The project remains under construction until its completion which is scheduled for late September 2016. Please exercise caution in the area and avoid entering the construction site. The overall project includes significant improvements to the clubhouse, new utilities, drainage, parking lot improvements and the use of temporary structures to allow for golf and Nordic operations during construction. The project also includes a modest expansion to accommodate community uses. The contractor is Evans Chaffee Construction Group. Vail Village

Christy Sports Remodel, 293 Bridge Street
Exterior work is nearly complete; construction fence is scheduled to be removed by Aug. 31. This remodel consists of interior and exterior improvements; completion of work is scheduled for mid September 2016. Contractor is Evans Chaffee Construction Group, Elliott Montgomery. Golden Peak Pickleball Courts, 461 Vail Valley Drive
Work continues with project completion date scheduled for early October 2016. The work includes replacement of the existing tennis courts with six pickleball courts and construction of a unisex public restroom, drinking fountain, parking and landscape improvements. Pepi’s Restaurant Addition, Gasthof Gramshammer, 231 Gore Creek Drive
All construction activity is currently behind the construction fence. Starting Sept. 6, the construction fence will be pushed out on Bridge Street to allow the remaining portion of the old entryway to be removed and rebuilt per plans. The construction fence will be pushed back during the remaining scheduled special events. All debris will be removed in the morning hours between 7 and 8:30 a.m. Construction includes demolition of existing bathrooms and bar area, plus upgrade to mechanical systems, lighting, interior floor and wall finishes, expanded seating area to front of building, installation of  new NanaWall door, entry doors and windows, new roof and balcony. Vail Valley Medical Center Phase 1: West Wing, 181 West Meadow Dr.
The pedestrian sidewalk in front of the hospital may have temporary closures to allow temporary site access and material delivery to the south side of the project. Traffic control will be provided. Work continues on the hospital driveway access off of West Meadow Drive. Please exercise caution when in the area. Construction on the project continues with work contained within the construction fence. This project consists of a new fourth floor and expansions on the south and west sides. All construction vehicle access will enter and exit on Vail Road/West Meadow Drive. All hospital services will remain open and fully functional throughout the construction. To access the Emergency Department, use West Meadow Drive. All other patients and visitors should access the hospital via South Frontage Road West. Phase I is scheduled to be completed in 2017. Gorsuch Building, Commissary Restaurant, 263 Gore Creek Dr.
Interior and exterior improvements are ongoing. All construction deliveries will occur prior to 10:30 a.m. unless approval is granted by the Town of Vail. This project is for a full-service restaurant in the prior Ore House location and includes interior and exterior improvements. Estimated completion date is late September 2016. Contractor is Rocky Mountain Construction Group; contact is Mark Hallenbeck, 719-499-9248.

Lionshead Village

Vail Spa Exterior remodel, 710 West Lionshead Circle
Completion date is scheduled for November 2016. Work is contained within the property boundaries. Improvements include new stucco and paint, new windows, exterior and interior pool improvements and new locker rooms. Contractor is R.A. Nelson & Associates, Justin Pronga, 970-949-5152. The Lion Redevelopment (formerly Strata and Lionshead Inn and Lionshead Annex), 705 W. Lionshead Circle
Interior, exterior and site work are ongoing. Starting Sept. 12, work is scheduled to start on the South Frontage Road median. Completion of the island could take a couple of weeks. Traffic control will be provided. Completion of the project is scheduled for late December 2016. Impacts include various periodic single lane closures along the South Frontage Road and West Lionshead Circle throughout the duration of the project. Contractor is PCL Construction, Inc. Outlying

Xcel Energy Gas Main Replacement, Beaver Dam Road
Xcel Energy has discovered that the main gas line on Beaver Dam Road does not meet Xcel’s standards and requires a total replacement. The current start date is Sept. 6 pending submittal of plans, public notification and permits. Contractor is Site Wise Corporation. Xcel Energy contact is Jay Cheney, 720-320-3312. I-70 Vail Underpass project
Phase 2 of the I-70 Vail Underpass project includes major construction activities along the North and South Frontage Roads. These activities include mass excavation, utility relocation, stone veneer on the bridge abutments and retaining wall construction. Work along the North Frontage Road and North Recreational Path is ongoing and includes the following:

  • CenturyLink and fiber optic line relocations continue by a specialty contractor along the North Frontage Road. This will require 7 day a week, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. work through Labor Day weekend, Sept. 5. The project team will take efforts to mitigate light impacts on surrounding neighbors and traffic by directing light downward on the work site.
  • Demolition along the North Recreational Path, please use caution in this area, traffic control will be in place to direct pedestrian traffic.

The Frontage Roads will continue to function as one-way traffic only through the project site until the end of November. I-70 has generally returned to its two-way traffic flow in both directions; however, during non-peak days and times, intermittent single lane closures will be required throughout the fall months. The traffic flow on the Frontage Roads will mirror I-70 - the North Frontage Road is westbound only through the project site, while the South Frontage Road is eastbound traffic only through the project site. Apart from the project site, the Frontage Roads operate as normal two-way traffic.  Drivers traveling on the Frontage Roads who reach the one-way stretch in the wrong direction will have the opportunity to turn around and use I-70 or the opposite Frontage Road to reach their destination. Note: West Vail transit routes are operating with a modified schedule. The project is scheduled for completion by December 2017. Xcel Energy HP South Frontage Road Utility Work
The majority of the work to lower the high pressure gas main along the South Frontage Road between Donovan Park and the I-70 Underpass project is complete. Restoration will continue through mid September, including asphalt repair and landscaping. This work will generally require only shoulder closures except for 1 or 2 days of single lane closures for asphalt patching. The lowering and relocating of utilities is part of the I-70 Vail Underpass project. Completion of the work is scheduled for late October 2016. Contractor is Snelson Companies Inc./Xcel Energy. McDonald’s Redevelopment, 2171 North Frontage Road
Construction work includes interior/exterior remodel, landscaping and parking lot improvements. Work is underway; completion dated is scheduled for late November 2016. Contractor is Christofferson Commercial Builders Inc. Contact person is Craig Sorvald, 719-499-0582, csovald0999@gmail.com.

Fire Station 1 remodel (East Vail), 4116 Columbine Dr.
A street cut to install a new water service line is currently scheduled for the week of Sept. 6. A single lane closure is required and may take three days to complete. Traffic control will be provided. The fire station will remain staffed during construction. Due to safety concerns, members of the public who need to contact the crew at this location should call 911 for emergencies or 970-479-2257 for other business. This project will increase the size of the apparatus bay to improve functionality and safety. It will also include space for firefighting equipment storage. The project will add one employee housing unit, while eliminating resident firefighter dormitories which have been moved to the West Vail Fire Station. The finished project will also showcase landscaping which meets scenic screening objectives while providing for sufficient fire defensible space. Contractor is MW Golden Constructors. Booth Creek Park redevelopment, 2900 Manns Ranch Road
 
Construction of the Booth Creek Park redevelopment project continues. The work is slightly behind schedule but is anticipated to still be completed in late October. The tennis court has been poured, building foundations are in place and vertical construction will begin soon. The work involves a compete redevelopment of the existing park and includes new hard-surface tennis courts, picnic pavilion, restrooms and children’s playground. The park is anticipated to be completed in October 2016. Town of Vail contact is Todd Oppenheimer at 970-479-2161.

Vail Cascade Resort and Spa Remodel, 1300 Westhaven Dr.
This $35 million renovation project includes upgrades to guest rooms, restaurant, market, lounge and bar area, new spa and more. The Aria Athletic Club and Spa and Vail Cascade Condominiums will remain open throughout the construction. Town of Vail contact is Leonard Sandoval, 970-479-2198.

Lion’s Ridge Apartment Homes construction (redevelopment of eastern half of Timber Ridge), 1265 N. Frontage Road W.
A temporary certificate of occupancy for buildings 3 and 4 has been issued by the Community Development Department. Landscaping and punch list items will continue until the project is complete. This project involved the demolition of 102 two-bedroom units and the construction of 112 new one- and two-bedroom units. Contractor is RA Nelson. Colorado Department of Transportation Projects

I-70 Chain Station
Crews continue installation of the new lighting and retaining wall. The existing eastbound chain station will be closed the week of Aug. 29 for continued installation of the new light poles. There will be an eastbound single lane closure the week of Aug. 29. There will be no lane closures after 12 p.m. on Friday Sept. 2. The frontage road will be reduced to one lane during construction; delays of up to 5 minutes may be expected and flaggers will assist travelers. Construction includes expanding the eastbound chain station 1,500 feet to the west, retaining wall between the interstate and frontage road, upgraded lighting and water quality. The eastbound I-70 outside shoulder will be reduced to two feet from 10 feet on westbound I-70 through the chain station expansion. The existing chain up station may be closed until September. There will be a bike route detour in place during construction that routes around the project using the Gore Valley Trail, Vail Valley Drive and Sunburst Drive. The project is scheduled be completed prior to the 2016-2017 ski season. CDOT has contracted with SEMA Construction for improvements to the chain station in East Vail. I-70 Vail Pass Barrier Project
Construction includes replacement of substandard bridge rail and concrete barrier on I-70 from milepost 180 to 186 on eastbound and westbound. Work has begun; expect eastbound and westbound single lane closures on Vail Pass the week of Aug. 29. There will be no lanes closures on Friday, Sept. 2. Traffic Impacts during the bridge rail work include narrowing and shifting the through-lanes and single lane closures for the concrete barrier replacement. The maximum length of lane closures will be two miles to further minimize delays in each direction. Two lanes will be open from Friday at 7 a.m. until Monday at 7 a.m. The project will have some night work.  Construction is weather dependent and will be completed in 2017 with no work occurring between approximately October 2016 and end of April 2017.
