I-70 Vail Underpass Phase 2

The results of the lane configuration change at the Vail Town Center interchange has been positive; it has reduced congestion and increased northbound capacity by approximately 25%. To drive the new lane configuration safely and most efficiently, keep these driving tips in mind:

  • Use both northbound lanes to access the I-70 on-ramp, merge on the ramp
  • Use signals when changing lanes, and yield to drivers on your left
  • Change to the correct lane prior to entering the north roundabout: use only the outside northbound lane to access Spraddle Creek Road or the North Frontage Road, use only the inside lane to return south in the southbound lane

Xcel Energy Gas Main Replacement, Beaver Dam Road
Xcel Energy has discovered that the main gas line on Beaver Dam Road does not meet Xcel’s standards and requires a total replacement in the very near future. Xcel Energy subcontractor (Site Wise Corporation) is currently looking at boring in a new main line, which would start at the intersection of Vail Road/Beaver Dam Road and travel west approximately 1,300 linear feet. Additional potholing is scheduled west of Beaver Dam Circle to determine if that section of gas main also needs to be included. Official start date (other than utility potholing) is TBD, pending submittal of plans, public notification and permits. Contractor is Site Wise Corporation. Xcel Energy contact is Jay Cheney, 720-320-3312. Town of Vail contact, Leonard Sandoval, 970-390-4677.

I-70 Vail Underpass project
Phase 2 of the I-70 Vail Underpass project includes major construction activities along the North and South Frontage Roads. These activities include mass excavation, utility relocation, stone veneer on the bridge abutments and retaining wall construction. The Frontage Roads are functioning as one-way traffic only though the project site. I-70 has generally returned to its two-way traffic flow in both directions; however, during non-peak days and times, intermittent single lane closures will be required throughout the summer months. The traffic flow on the Frontage Roads will mirror I-70 - the North Frontage Road is westbound only through the project site, while the South Frontage Road is eastbound traffic only through the project site. Apart from the project site, the Frontage Roads operate as normal two-way traffic.  Drivers traveling on the Frontage Roads who reach the one-way stretch in the wrong direction will have the opportunity to turn around and use I-70 or the opposite Frontage Road to reach their destination. Note: West Vail transit routes are operating with a modified schedule. The project is scheduled for completion by December 2017. For updated project information, visit, or call the project hotline at 970-685-7706. To help commuters plan their drives and to follow progress of the construction, a webcam has been installed. Visit the project website or go to to view.

The lowering and relocating of utilities is part of the I-70 Vail Underpass project. Completion of the work is scheduled for late October 2016. Contractor is Snelson Companies Inc./Xcel Energy.
