Weekly Construction Update Meetings

Weekly construction update meetings have returned for the fall season and are taking place at 9 a.m. each Tuesday through Nov. 15 in the Lionshead Welcome Center, 395 East Lionshead Circle. Facilitated by Leonard Sandoval, Town of Vail construction area coordinator, the meetings include updates on projects such as the new skatepark at the Lionshead parking structure, expansion of Vail Valley Medical Center, realignment of the entry to the Vail Municipal Building and scheduled utility projects. Neighbors, contractors and others impacted by the various construction projects are invited to participate.

Golf Course Clubhouse Renovation Meetings

The Town of Vail is hosting a weekly meeting to review the schedule for renovation of the Vail Golf and Nordic Clubhouse. These meetings, facilitated by Leonard Sandoval, are being held at 1 p.m. on Wednesdays through Oct. 14 in the Town of Vail Public Works Administration Building, 1309 Elkhorn Drive. The clubhouse meetings are used to discuss staging, traffic coordination and other neighborhood topics associated with the project. A Vail Recreation District representative is present at the meetings to answer any operational questions regarding Golf and Nordic. Fall Construction Season

Contractors are allowed to work within the public right-of-way in Vail Village and Lionshead from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week from Sept. 8 to Nov. 15, with the exception of designated special event days, such as the Vail Farmers’ Market and Okoberfest. All contractors must adhere to the construction guidelines which are described in the 2015 Vail Village/Lionshead Village construction information handout.  To view a map of the 2015 projects or for other construction related information, click here.

Vail Police: Be Bear Aware

The Vail Police Department is reminding contractors to be mindful about bears and other wildlife. Construction sites are required to use bear-proof containers. Be sure to remove all food items from vehicles and keep them locked. Report all bear activity by calling the police department at 970-479-2201.

Here’s a recap of the various construction projects in and around Vail.

Golf Course Neighborhood

Vail Golf & Nordic Clubhouse Renovation, 1775 Sunburst Drive
Clubhouse demolition of the building is complete and excavation of foundation is underway. Temporary structures are scheduled to be delivered and installed the week of Oct. 5. The project includes significant improvements to the clubhouse, new utilities, drainage, parking lot improvements and the installation of temporary structures to allow for golf and Nordic operations during construction. Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 8 until closing day on Oct. 25, golf operations will allow for 18-hole play via walking, push carts and golf bikes. Also, 40 gas-powered carts are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Snacks and beverages are available via the starter building. The driving range will close for the season during the week of Sept. 28. Nordic operations will begin on Nov. 1 with season pass and retail sales in temporary facilities. As part of the renovation, all existing uses of the building, such as the pro shop, Nordic center, restaurant and cart storage will receive significant improvements. The project also includes a modest expansion to accommodate community uses. The contractor is Evans Chaffee Construction Group. Vail Village

Vail Valley Medical Center Phase 1: West Wing, 181 West Meadow Dr.
Project consists of a new fourth floor and expansions on the south and west sides. Steel deliveries and installation are ongoing. All construction vehicle access will enter and exit on Vail Road/West Meadow Drive. Please exercise caution with the delivery of materials and oversize equipment. All hospital services will remain open and fully functional throughout the construction. To access the Emergency Department, use West Meadow Drive. All other patients and visitors should access the hospital via South Frontage Road West. Phase I is scheduled to be completed in 2017. Contractor is G.E. Town of Vail Municipal Building Parking Lot Improvements, 75 S. Frontage Road
Work includes relocating and improving the Municipal Building parking lot access, South Frontage Road improvements, the construction of new turn lanes to Vail Valley Medical Center and the Municipal Building and landscaping. Construction is underway with completion scheduled for Nov. 1. Public access to the Community Development Building is on the north side of the Municipal parking lot. A limited amount of public parking is available on site. Traffic control is provided by Upper Valley Elite. Contractor is G.E. Johnson Construction Company, Andy Sandoval, 970-376-2532. Vail Village Parking Structure, third floor restrooms remodel (Near La Cantina), 240 S. Frontage Road West
The men’s and women’s restrooms closed on Sept. 28 and will remain closed for 4-5 weeks for a full remodel including all new plumbing fixtures, counter tops and tile walls and floors. Temporary restrooms will be provided on the top deck of the structure at the east end of the Welcome Center. Town of Vail contact is John King, 970-376-0949.

Wall Street Building remodel, 225 Wall St.
Work includes adding 900 square feet of commercial space and 330 square feet of office space with a completion date of late September 2015. Gorsuch Building, Commissary Restaurant, 263 Gore Creek Dr.
Full service restaurant in the prior Ore House location, includes interior and exterior improvements. Start date TBD. Contractor is Rocky Mountain Construction Group; contact is Mark Hallenbeck, 719-499-9248.

Sebastian Unit 507 reconstruction, 16 Vail Road
Remodel consists of exterior and interior work to the fifth floor and roof. Work includes use of a tower crane and construction staging within CDOT right-of-way. During construction, a temporary single lane and sidewalk closures on the South Frontage Road will be required to accommodate construction. Contractor is required to comply with the 2015 Vail Village/Lionshead Village construction hours handout. Project completion date is April 2016. Construction activity within CDOT right-of-way will be completed by Nov. 15, 2015. Contractor is Haselden Construction. Contact is Brandon Hern, 303-482-7685.

Lionshead Village

Skatepark at Lionshead parking structure, 350 South Frontage Road West
Includes new skatepark, lighting and public art. Project is underway; completion is scheduled for early November 2015. Contractor is California Skateparks. Contact is Steve Berger, 909-721-7341. Town of Vail contact is Todd Oppenheimer, 970-479-2161. 

The Lion Redevelopment (formerly Strata and Lionshead Inn and Lionshead Annex), 705 W. Lionshead Circle
Construction continues with concrete pours and steel deliveries with the building now emerging from below grade and visible from the street. Construction began last spring and is scheduled for a fall 2016 completion. Impacts include various periodic single lane closures along the South Frontage Road and West Lionshead Circle throughout the duration of the project. Contractor is PCL Construction, Inc. I-70 Vail Underpass Project
In preparation for the start of construction of the I-70 Vail Underpass Project in April 2016, CDOT will be constructing temporary paved crossover detours within the median of I-70 this fall. Lion’s Ridge Apartment Homes construction (redevelopment of eastern half of Timber Ridge), 1265 N. Frontage Road W.
The new driveway entrance, utility work and bike path improvements are complete. Building 1 and 2 (east side) scheduled for completion by Oct. 1, 2015. Construction continues on building 4, building 3, soon to follow. Completion of entire project is scheduled for spring 2016. This project involves the demolition of 102 two-bedroom units and the construction of 112 new one and two bedroom units. Contractor is RA Nelson. Town of Vail contact is George Ruther, 970-479-2145.

Marriott Residences (formerly Roost Lodge), 1783 Frontage Road West
Construction is currently on hold. Proposed construction start date is now scheduled for spring of 2016. Contractor is G.E. Johnson Construction Company. Contact is Andy Sandoval, 970-376-2523.

I-70 Bridge improvements at Eagle-Vail
This Colorado Department of Transportation project began last August and consists of repairing and rehabilitating both the eastbound and westbound bridge structures located near mile marker 168.7, at the point where I-70 crosses over both the Eagle River and Highway 6. More specifically, work includes girder repair, bridge deck repair and repaving. Structures, Inc. of Englewood is the contractor for the $8.1 million project. Rockledge Road and mid-Forest Road water, sewer and drainage improvements
In a joint project with the Eagle River Water and Sanitation District, water, sewer and storm drain infrastructure is being upgraded on Rockledge Road and a portion of Forest Road. Water and sewer main replacement and paving operations are complete on Forest Road. Water main replacement continues on Rockledge Road, with the bottom of Rockledge currently closed to through traffic. To access areas on Rockledge Road above the construction, use the Mill Creek tunnel. Erosion control and reconstruction of disturbed areas continues within the entire project boundary. The project should finish in early November. If needed, work will resume after the 2015-16 ski season and be complete by July 2016. Bighorn Creek culvert replacement at Columbine Drive
The project began Aug. 1 and is 90 percent complete. The new culvert has been installed. A new water main was scheduled to be installed the week of Sept. 14, followed by final site restoration and paving. The Bighorn Creek Trailhead parking is relocated to along the shoulder of Columbine Drive just south of I-70 to facilitate construction. The trail access will remain open to the public; however, parking will be prohibited at the trailhead. Final project completion is scheduled for the end of October. Icon, Inc. is the contractor.
