I-70 Vail Underpass Phase 2 Critical Updates
- Beginning mid-day Monday, July 25, motorists at the Town Center interchange in Vail will be directed into a new lane configuration that will add additional capacity for commuters accessing the Interstate 70 westbound on-ramp. The northbound lane beneath I-70 will be restriped to carry two 11 foot lanes of traffic through the underpass around the north side teardrop roundabout, and then onto the I-70 westbound on-ramp.
Engineers from the town and Colorado Department of Transportation will be monitoring the new configuration throughout the week to determine if the trial period will be continued. Engineers estimate the two-lane travel will increase capacity by 30 percent at the interchange, helping to provide some relief to the weekday commuter congestion that has been occurring between 4:30 and 6 p.m.
- CenturyLink's subcontractor is continuing with fiber optic line relocation within the road closure limits on the South Frontage Road as part of the underpass project. This work is anticipated to be completed by July 29 with work taking place 7 days per week from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Light plants will be utilized as necessary to complete the work between 7:30 p.m. and 10 p.m.

I-70 Vail Underpass project
This work is anticipated to be completed by July 29 with work taking place 7 days per week from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Light plants will be utilized as necessary to complete the work between 7:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. The work is being completed by a specialty utilities contractor with limited availability which requires the extended schedule to get the work completed. This will allow the fiber and telephone duct bank to be lowered in place up to 15’ with no interruption. This same operation will occur again at the end of August to facilitate CenturyLink’s fiber relocate on the North Frontage Road. The team will make every effort to direct the lights downward and onto the work itself to minimize glare impact to all surrounding residents and traffic.
Phase 2 of the I-70 Vail Underpass project includes major construction activities along the North and South Frontage Roads. The Frontage Roads are functioning as one-way traffic only though the project site. I-70 has generally returned to its two-way traffic flow in both directions; however, during non-peak days and times, intermittent single lane closures will be required throughout the summer months. The traffic flow on the Frontage Roads will mirror I-70 - the North Frontage Road is westbound only through the project site, while the South Frontage Road is eastbound traffic only through the project site. Apart from the project site, the Frontage Roads operate as normal two-way traffic. Drivers traveling on the Frontage Roads who reach the one-way stretch in the wrong direction will have the opportunity to turn around and use I-70 or the opposite Frontage Road to reach their destination. Note: West Vail transit routes are operating with a modified schedule. The project is scheduled for completion by December 2017. For updated project information, visit www.codot.gov/projects/i70vailunderpass, or call the project hotline at 970-685-7706.
