Construction Meetings

Weekly construction meetings are taking place every Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. on the ground level of the Lionshead Welcome Center until Nov. 15. Contractors working in the areas of the Vail Village and Lionshead core areas are asked to attend, provide updates, coordinate and communicate any impacts as it relates to construction activity within the right of way and to the general public; the pubic is invited to attend. Online Citizen Portal

Customers of the Community Development Department have access to a 24/7 online citizen portal to submit applications for contractor registration and various construction-related permits. The portal, at http://vail.onlinegovt.com/ also accepts planning applications for review by the Design Review Board and Planning and Environmental Commission. In addition, residents can access the citizen portal to submit a code enforcement request or check to see the status of any permit activity in their neighborhood. Vail Village

Gore Creek Riparian Buffer Plantings
Contractors will be installing native plantings along multiple sections of Gore Creek between Ford Park and Cascade Village. No impacts to the public are anticipated. The project is anticipated for completion by mid-June. Contractors are SHC Landscape, Mike Stephens, 970-904-0198 (Village area) and Rocky Mountain Custom Landscapes, Brian Wells, 970-331-1446 (Lionshead area). Plaza Building Sewer Service Repairs, 291 Bridge Street
Work to install pavers is underway. Upper Bridge Street is closed to all vehicle traffic while excavation to repair a damage sewer line is completed. A 6 foot pedestrian access will be maintained at all times. Vehicle access must enter and exit on Hanson Ranch Road. Pedestrian and traffic control will be provided. Excavation to repair the damaged sewer service line to the Plaza Building is ongoing; a portion of Upper Bridge Street will be closed and narrowed for excavating equipment and staging. Vail Village Parking Structure, 241 East Meadow Drive
One elevator cab is complete and operational; the second one is on hold until June 6 as new elevator cabs are being installed on the east side of the Vail Village parking structure. Repairs to the elevators will be completed one at a time so that one will always be operational and available to the public. Town of Vail Contract is John King, 970-376-0949.

Slifer Square Water Feature Replacement
BrightView Land Development, Inc. is on site working to replace the existing water feature in Slifer Square located between the Vail Village parking structure and the Covered Bridge. The work is required to eliminate the water leak and improve the safety of the water feature. The work began April 22 with a full street closure; completion is scheduled for the end of June. During this time frame, the in-town bus route will be re-routed to the South Frontage Road in this location. This work follows up the completion of deep utility work and stormwater quality improvements in Slifer Square in 2018. Town of Vail contact is Chad Salli, 970-479-2169.

East Meadow Drive Snowmelt and Paver Replacement
United Companies is working to replace the damaged snowmelt and pavers on East Meadow Drive from Village Center Drive to Willow Bridge Road. The work began on April 22 and is scheduled to be completed by May 31. In coordination with the work at Slifer Square, the in-town bus route will be re-routed to the South Frontage Road to bypass this location. Vehicle access to any portion of East Meadow Drive will need to coordinate with Checkpoint Charlie to determine the best point of access. Town of Vail contact is Tom Kassmel, 970-479-2235.

Vail Town Center South Roundabout Paver Apron Installation
Work is underway, please exercise caution when entering and exiting the roundabout. The town has contracted with United Companies to install a paver apron at the Vail Town Center (exit 176) South Roundabout. The work will be completed by May 31. During work hours, the roundabout will be narrowed to a single lane roundabout; the inside lane will be closed. Town of Vail contact is Tom Kassmel, 970-479-2235.

Mountain View Residence Phase II, 434 South Frontage Road East
The north side of the parking garage is the staging area for trucks and material deliveries. This work is being conducted for the purpose of validating the existing conditions to ensure assumptions made in the design of the proposed building are accurate. Ski and Snowboard Club Vail Redevelopment, 598 Vail Valley Drive
Phase I of the project has received a Temporary Certificate of Occupancy; areas still under construction are contained within the construction fenced area. Site grading, cleanup and landscaping will occur as weather permits. This is a redevelopment of the Ski and Snowboard Vail site to include a private and public club and multi-family residential dwelling units. Asphalt paving of the bike path is scheduled to be completed by June 21. Completion date is summer of 2019. General contractor is Viele and Company, David Viele, 970-476-3082. Hill Building, 254 Bridge Street
Construction deliveries will continue to occur on Bridge Street for the project between 7 and 8:30 a.m. This is a major remodel of the building. The project completion date is scheduled for early summer of 2019. Contractor is Olson & Sons Construction Inc., Tim Olson, 970-390-7303. Town of Vail contact is Leonard Sandoval, 970-390-4677.

Vail Health Master Facility Plan, 180 S. Frontage Road
The 300-ton crane required to install the pre cast concrete is on site. Precast concrete deliveries continue and will be unloaded from the South Frontage Road staging area. Concrete pours will continue on the south side of the site adding vehicle congestion to West Meadow Drive.  Please exercise caution along South Frontage Road and West Meadow Drive. Phase II of the Master Facility Plan includes the tear-down and replacement of the current east wing administration building and garage, replacing it with a new parking garage and hospital building to house new emergency and imaging departments, as well as a new lobby, central plant, tenant space and material management department. All hospital services will remain open and fully functional throughout the construction. To access the Emergency Department, use Vail Road/West Meadow Drive. Hospital patients and visitors should park (valet parking only, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.) in the hospital parking lot on West Meadow Drive. Patients and guests of the Medical Professional Building (US Bank) should park (valet parking, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.) in the underground parking lot of the Medical Professional Building accessible by West Meadow Drive. Row House Units 9 & 10, 303 Gore Creek Drive
Single lane closures are scheduled for deliveries throughout the spring and summer months; pending public way permit approval, traffic control will be provided. Construction activity will be contained within property boundaries and construction fencing. Project consists of an interior and exterior remodel. Row House Units 11, 303 Gore Creek Drive
Excavation on Gore Creek Drive is underway to locate and install a new water service line. This work is scheduled to be completed by May 17. Single lane closures are scheduled for deliveries throughout the spring and summer months; pending public way permit approval, traffic control will be provided. Project consists of an interior/exterior remodel and addition. Project completion date has yet TBD. Contractor is SRE Building Associates, Casey Brune, 970-376-5568. Lionshead

Antlers at Vail, 680 Lionshead Place
Work consists of remodel/addition to existing lobby (3rd floor) and an addition of a 4th floor to the lobby which will be offices and a conference room. A new elevator will be included in the addition that will extend from the lower level of parking to the 7th floor. Along with the existing conference room and existing accounting offices, these areas will be remodeled into a new condominium unit. The Antlers courtyard will be closed during construction. Vail Spa Sidewalk Improvements, 710 W. Lionshead Cr.
The Vail Spa has contracted with ICON Inc. to install 250 square feet of heated paver walkway along West Lionshead Circle from the existing Vail Spa walkway to the newly installed crosswalk on West Meadow Drive between Vail Spa and the Vail Marriott Hotel. Construction requires a single lane closure during work hours, traffic control will be provided. Start date was May 17 with completion scheduled for June 21. Lionshead Parking Structure, 395 South Frontage Road
Structural and topping slab repairs on the Lionshead parking structure began April 22. This work requires closure of the top north parking deck.  All vehicles will be required to enter and exit from the bottom, southwest entrance on East Lionshead Circle. Signage and traffic control personnel will be on site directing people to the lower entrance. The areas under repair will be closed to the public; some areas will be closed for an extended length of time. For your safety and the safety of the construction crew, please honor all closures. Lionshead Village Lower Concert Hall Plaza Stair Replacement
Remaining work to complete the project is installing of the handrails. The town has contracted with Icon, Inc., to replace the lowest level of stairs at Concert Hall Plaza near Moe’s BBQ. The work will be completed by May 31. Pedestrian access will be detoured via Lionshead Place and the Arrabelle drive entrance. Town of Vail contact is Tom Kassmel, 970-479-2235.

Battle Mountain/Lazier Parking Garage, 534 East Lionshead Cr.
New proposed projects on the eastern and western portion of the lots are currently under design. Start date TBD. General contractor is Meadow Mountain Homes, Sean McGinley, 970-926-2824 (office); Town of Vail contact is Leonard Sandoval, 970-390-4677.

Lionsquare Lodge South Interior Renovation, 660 Lionshead Place
New driveway entrance to parking lot currently underway as well as landscaping and punch list items remaining from last fall project. The project includes interior upgrades to the existing conference room, including new celling finishes, room dividers, lighting and interior trim and parking lot improvements. Contractor is R.A. Outlying

I-70 Avon to Vail Resurfacing
The Colorado Department of Transportation, with United Companies, will be resurfacing all lanes and shoulders of I-70 between Avon and West Vail. They will also replace guardrail and bridge joints, extend the eastbound acceleration lane at the Minturn exit and improve drainage. Construction has begun and will continue through mid-October 2019. General working hours will be nightly from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday through Thursday. Motorists can expect a single lane closure, both EB and WB I-70 during work hours, with speeds reduced to 40 mph for safety. All business access will be maintained but only temporarily altered. Ford Park Weather Shelter, 518 South Frontage Road
Construction is underway on the Ford Park Weather Shelter. Contractors will be accessing the site on the bike path along the Frontage Road. People walking from the Ford Park lot are advised to be aware of construction activities. Work on the shelter will continue through May. Ford Park, Frontage Road Landscaping
Landscape planting is taking place between the Ford Park Parking Lot and the South Frontage Road. Some parking spaces in the area may be coned off.  Work is scheduled for completion by June 1. The contractor is GH Daniels and Associates. Town of Vail contact is Todd Oppenheimer, 970-479-2161.

Vail Golf Course, New Starter Shack, 1655 Sunburst Dr.
The project consists of demolition of the existing building and reconstruction of a new 1,453 square foot building. Construction is underway with a completion date of June. Contractor is R.A. Nelson & Associates, Matt Anderson. Vail Recreation District contact is Scott O’Connell, 970-477-5264.

Vail Golf Course, # 14 and #15 Bridge Replacements, 1755 Sunburst Dr.
The project consists of removal and replacement of #14 and #15 golf cart bridges. Construction is complete for the winter months. Landscaping and asphalt repairs will be completed this spring. I-70 East Vail Landscape Improvements
Landscaping and punch list items are scheduled for spring/summer of 2019. Work began the week of April 22. The Town of Vail has contracted with Rocky Mountain Custom Landscapes to install landscape improvements at the East Vail interchange. This work follows the installation of the water quality improvements at the interchange completed earlier. Town of Vail contact is Chad Salli, 970-479-2169.

Red Sandstone School Renovation, 551 North Frontage Road
The school is open and operational; vehicular access to the school and Gymnastics Center is now one-way only going east up to the school with traffic exiting around the west side of the parking structure to reach the North Frontage Road. The exterior and site work (landscaping, etc.) will be completed in the spring as weather and temperatures allow. The project has included the complete renovation of Red Sandstone Elementary School. This included removal of the existing exterior finish material and installing new IECC compliant insulation and new exterior finishes, rearranging the existing school program and classrooms to allow for larger classrooms (to meet the current Eagle County School District standards). The new two-story addition along the south façade of the building has created a cafeteria, serving line and secure vestibule, all of which the school did not previously have. The second level of the addition expands the library space into a media center space as well. Contractor is Haselden Construction, Nate Ainsworth, 303-242-4041.
 
Red Sandstone Elementary School Parking Garage, 551 North Frontage Road West
The lower 3 levels of the parking garage are closed to the public as of April 22 to complete remaining punch list items. Completion of this work is currently scheduled for May 30. The fourth level of the structure is for Red Sandstone school staff, teachers and employees. Landscaping and punch list items are scheduled for the spring/summer of 2019. Fire Hydrant Replacement and Water Main Upgrade, 2841 Basingdale Blvd.
Replacement of the damaged fire hydrant and improvement of the water main is complete. Weather delayed final paving, which will take one day and should occur this week, weather depending. There will be a single line closure at Basingdale Boulevard during paving operations, which will occur between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. with traffic control measures in place. Solar Vail Apartments, 501 N. Frontage Road West
Project is contained within the construction fence. The former employee housing located just east of the Vail Gymnastics Center is being replaced with a 4-story, 65-unit rental housing development by Sonnenalp Resorts. Occupancy is anticipated by October 2019. Eagle River Water & Sanitation District is coordinating with R.A. Nelson to upgrade the water main within the construction fence. Contractor is R.A. Vail Street Slurry Seal Project
Crews hired by the Town of Vail will begin an annual street maintenance project beginning June 3. The slurry seal work will be taking place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday thru Wednesday and will continue to June 5, weather dependent.  Slurry seal creates a new wearing surface and seals the asphalt to prevent the damaging effects of water intrusion into the pavement. Roads will be slurried one lane at a time to allow for single-lane traffic to be maintained at all times; however, motorists should expect delays. Traffic will be allowed to return to the new surface after it dries, typically after two hours. The following roads are scheduled to receive the slurry treatment this year: Buffehr Creek Road (June 4-5), Lions Ridge Loop (June 3-4), Sunburst Drive (June 3-4), and Vail Valley Drive from the South Frontage Road to Ptarmigan Road (June 3-4).
