Weekly Construction Update Meetings

Vail Police: Be Bear Aware

The Vail Police Department is reminding contractors to be mindful about bears and other wildlife. Construction sites are required to use bear-proof containers. Be sure to remove all food items from vehicles and keep them locked. Report all bear activity by calling the police department at 970-479-2201.

Golf Course Neighborhood

Vail Golf & Nordic Clubhouse Renovation, 1775 Sunburst Drive
Project is nearing completion. Building interior, exterior, landscaping and completion of the parking lot improvements continue. Substantial completion is scheduled for Oct. 31. Please exercise caution in the area and avoid entering the construction site. The overall project includes significant improvements to the clubhouse, new utilities, drainage, parking lot improvements and the use of temporary structures to allow for golf and Nordic operations during construction. The project also includes a modest expansion to accommodate community uses. The contractor is Evans Chaffee Construction Group. Vail Golf Course Hole #14 Stream bank Restoration
Stream bank stabilization and restoration will continue at the Vail Golf Course Hole #14 tee box. Work is anticipated to be completed by the end of October. No impacts to the Golf Course are anticipated. Please use caution in this area. Town of Vail contact is Gregg Barrie at 970-479-2337.


Vail Village

Golden Peak Pickleball Courts, 461 Vail Valley Drive
The pickleball courts are now complete and open for play. Pickleball players can contact the Vail Recreation District at 970-479-2279 to schedule time to play. Please be aware there is still some minor construction activity occurring on the site. The courts will remain open for a few weeks until winter conditions require them to be closed for the season. The work included replacement of the existing tennis courts with six pickleball courts and construction of a unisex public restroom, drinking fountain, parking and landscape improvements. Red Lion Inn Condo # 3 Renovation, 304 Bridge Street
Work consists of adding 714 square feet to both level 1 and level 2. Project is underway, scheduled completion date is fall 2017. Single lane closures are scheduled during the fall off-season morning hours on Bridge Street during the demolition process. Contractor is Beck Building Company, Kevin Fifield, 970-904-1283. Pepi’s Restaurant Addition, Gasthof Gramshammer, 231 Gore Creek Drive
A new ADA ramp to the restaurant will be under construction starting Nov. 1 and is scheduled to be completed by Nov. 15. Construction is ongoing, all debris will be removed in the morning hours between 7 and 8:30 a.m. Construction includes demolition of existing bathrooms and bar area, plus upgrade to mechanical systems, lighting, interior floor and wall finishes, expanded seating area to front of building, installation of new NanaWall door, entry doors and windows, new roof and balcony. Vail Valley Medical Center Phase 1: West Wing, 181 West Meadow Dr.
The pedestrian sidewalk repairs in front of the hospital will be completed by Oct. 28. Please exercise caution when in the area. Construction on the project continues with work contained within the construction fence. This project consists of a new fourth floor and expansions on the south and west sides. All construction vehicle access will enter and exit on Vail Road/West Meadow Drive. All hospital services will remain open and fully functional throughout the construction. To access the Emergency Department, use West Meadow Drive. All other patients and visitors should access the hospital via South Frontage Road West. Phase I is scheduled to be completed in 2017. Comcast Utility work on West Meadow Drive
Sage Telecommunications and HDD Specialist will have single lane closure between 82 and 182 West Meadow Drive, work is to provide a conduit for additional fiber to Vail Valley Medical Center.  West Meadow Drive will be narrowed to one lane. Traffic control will be provided. Work is scheduled to be completed by Oct. 31. Contact person is Tony Dreiling, 303-918-9292, Sage Telecommunications. Gorsuch Building, Commissary Restaurant, 263 Gore Creek Dr.
Construction fence will be pushed out into Bridge Street, a couple of feet to allow completion of the retaining wall and patio rail. Removal of construction fence is scheduled for early November. All construction deliveries will occur prior to 10:30 a.m. unless approval is granted by the Town of Vail. This project is for a full-service restaurant in the prior Ore House location and includes interior and exterior improvements. Estimated completion date is November 2016. Lionshead Village

Gore Creek Bank Repair
Work begins Monday, Oct. 24 to repair eroded stream banks along Gore Creek behind Lion Square Lodge. The Gore Valley Trail will be detoured during the project, which includes placement of boulders, installation of new soil, seeding and installation of new native plantings. The path will be open during the weekend, and all work should be completed by Nov. 1. Contractor is United Companies. Town of Vail contact is Gregg Barrie, 970-479-2337.

Vail Spa Exterior remodel, 710 West Lionshead Circle
Completion date for work on the exterior of the project is scheduled for mid November 2016. Work is contained within the property boundaries. Improvements include new stucco and paint, new windows, exterior and interior pool improvements and new locker rooms. Contractor is R.A. Nelson & Associates, Justin Pronga, 970-949-5152. The Lion Redevelopment (formerly Strata and Lionshead Inn and Lionshead Annex), 705 W. Lionshead Circle
Interior, exterior and site work are ongoing. Work continues on the South Frontage Road median, remaining work includes pavers and landscaping. Traffic control will be provided. Completion of the project is scheduled for late December 2016. Impacts include various periodic single lane closures along the South Frontage Road and West Lionshead Circle throughout the duration of the project. Contractor is PCL Construction, Inc. Xcel Energy Gas Main Replacement, Beaver Dam Road
Installation of the new gas main is nearing completion; asphalt repair which includes mill and overlay will follow. The new gas main to be installed is between 14 and 343 Beaver Dam Road. Xcel Energy has been communicating and providing additional information to all residences impacted by this work on Beaver Dam Road. Single lane closures are to be expected and traffic control will be provided. Work hours will be 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Completion date is Nov. 15. Xcel Energy has discovered that the main gas line on Beaver Dam Road does not meet Xcel’s standards and requires a total replacement, it has been determined that 1,500 liner feet will need to be replaced. Vail Resorts Snowcat Crossing, South Frontage Road
United Companies is scheduled to repair the damaged section of concrete on the South Frontage Road that allows snowcat access from the Vail Resorts maintenance yard to Vail Mountain. Work start date is scheduled for Oct. 24, pending CDOT permit approval. Completion date is Nov. 15. Single lane closure is required and traffic control will be provided. Donovan Park Picnic Shelter
Construction of a new picnic shelter for Donovan Park is underway. Work will be contained within a 6-foot high construction fence between the playground and the basketball court. Walkways will continue to be open as well as all other park facilities. Occasional walkway closures will occur during the initial stages of the project. The new structure will accommodate three picnic tables and will be completed by the spring of 2017. The contractor is R.A. Nelson. Town of Vail project manager is Gregg Barrie, 970-479-2337.

I-70 Vail Underpass project
Phase 2 of the I-70 Vail Underpass project includes major construction activities along the North and South Frontage Roads. These activities include mass excavation, utility relocation, stone veneer on the bridge abutments and retaining wall construction. 

Work along the North Frontage Road:

• North Recreational Path has been temporarily detoured, please use caution
• Storm sewer installation
• North Frontage Road retaining wall construction
• Driveway paving

Work along the South Frontage Road:

• Access to the Gore Valley Trail from the South Frontage Road using the bridge to the west of the Eagle River Water & Sanitation District plant will be closed through the end of November for utility and asphalt work in the area. Pedestrians and bicyclists are advised to access the Gore Valley Trail from West Forest Road, located approximately 1/4 mile to the east.
• Road grading

The Frontage Roads will continue to function as one-way traffic only through the project site until the end of November. I-70 has generally returned to its two-way traffic flow in both directions; however, during non-peak days and times, intermittent single lane closures will be required throughout the fall months. The traffic flow on the Frontage Roads will mirror I-70 - the North Frontage Road is westbound only through the project site, while the South Frontage Road is eastbound traffic only through the project site. Apart from the project site, the Frontage Roads operate as normal two-way traffic. Drivers traveling on the Frontage Roads who reach the one-way stretch in the wrong direction will have the opportunity to turn around and use I-70 or the opposite Frontage Road to reach their destination. Note: West Vail transit routes are operating with a modified schedule. The project is scheduled for completion by December 2017. McDonald’s Redevelopment, 2171 North Frontage Road
Construction work includes interior/exterior remodel, landscaping and parking lot improvements. Work is underway; completion date is scheduled for late November 2016. Contractor is Christofferson Commercial Builders Inc. Contact person is Craig Sorvald, 719-499-0582.

Fire Station 1 remodel (East Vail), 4116 Columbine Dr.
Construction continues. Due to safety concerns, members of the public who need to contact the crew at this location should call 911 for emergencies or 970-479-2257 for other business. This project will increase the size of the apparatus bay to improve functionality and safety. It will also include space for firefighting equipment storage. The project will add one employee housing unit, while eliminating resident firefighter dormitories which have been moved to the West Vail Fire Station. The finished project will also showcase landscaping which meets scenic screening objectives while providing for sufficient fire defensible space. Contractor is MW Golden Constructors. Booth Creek Park redevelopment, 2900 Manns Ranch Road
Construction of the Booth Creek Park redevelopment project continues. The tennis court has been finished, and building construction is at approximately 60 percent complete. Final grading and landscaping has begun. Weather will dictate if the sod will be installed this fall or need to wait until spring. The work involves a compete redevelopment of the existing park and includes new hard-surface tennis courts, picnic pavilion, restrooms and children’s playground. Vail Cascade Resort and Spa Remodel, 1300 Westhaven Dr.
Westhaven Drive street improvements for the tennis court conversion is nearly complete, landscaping will be completed as weather allows. Remaining work to the building and the new access is pending approval of the building permit. This $50 million renovation project includes upgrades to guest rooms, restaurant, market, lounge and bar area, new spa and more. The Aria Athletic Club and Spa and Vail Cascade Condominiums will remain open throughout the construction, which is scheduled to be completed in January 2017. New general contractors on site, PWI Construction will work on the hotel improvements; Evans Chaffee Construction Group will work on the tennis court conversion. Doubletree Hotel, 2211 North Frontage Road (formally the Holiday Inn)
Work includes renovation of the interior/exterior of the hotel, pool area upgrades and parking lot improvements. Start date was Aug. 15, 2016 with completion date mid-December 2016.  Contractor is Peak Professional Contractors Inc. Contact person, Valerie Thodde, owner’s rep/ project manager, 954-675-1522.


Colorado Department of Transportation Projects

I-70 Chain Station


Crews continue testing of the new lighting for the chain station and sign installation. The retaining wall construction is complete. There will be periodic single lane closures on eastbound I-70 the week of Oct. 24. The frontage road will see minor delays for clean up and drainage work.  The project is scheduled to be completed prior to the 2016-2017 ski season. CDOT has contracted with SEMA Construction for improvements to the chain station in East Vail. Town of Vail contact is Chad Salli, 970-479-2169. 

I-70 Vail Pass Barrier Project
Construction includes replacement of substandard bridge rail and concrete barrier on I-70 from milepost 180 to 186 on eastbound and westbound. Expect westbound single lane closures on Vail Pass Monday through Thursday the week of Oct. 24. Traffic Impacts during the bridge rail work include narrowing and shifting the through-lanes and single lane closures for the concrete barrier replacement. The maximum length of lane closures will be two miles to further minimize delays in each direction. Two lanes will be open from Friday at 7 a.m. until Monday at 7 a.m. The project will have some night work.  Construction is weather dependent and will be completed in 2017 with no work occurring between approximately October 2016 and end of April 2017.
