Weekly Construction Update Meetings

Weekly contractor construction update meetings are taking place at 9 a.m. on Tuesdays in the Lionshead Welcome Center. Meetings will be held every Tuesday through the fall of 2018. The public is invited to attend.

Online Citizen Portal

Customers of the Community Development Department have access to a 24/7 online citizen portal to submit applications for contractor registration and various construction-related permits. The portal, at http://vail.onlinegovt.com/ also accepts planning applications for review by the Design Review Board and Planning and Environmental Commission. In addition, residents can access the citizen portal to submit a code enforcement request or check to see the status of any permit activity in their neighborhood. Here’s a recap of the various construction projects currently ongoing in Vail as well as projects that will be beginning soon.

Vail Village

165 Forest Road, Full Street Closure
Full street closure is scheduled for one day on Wednesday, Oct., 10 to stage a crane to set a pool at 165 Forest Road. Work is scheduled to start at 7 a.m. and will reopen at 5 p.m. Traffic control will be provided. General contractor is Shaeffer Hyde Construction, Todd Mann, 970-376-6188. 434 South Frontage Road East, Mountain View Residence Phase II
Pending demo permit approval, work will include removal of existing vegetation, soils, stone cladding and debris surrounding the existing parking structure on the property. This work is being conducted for the purpose of validating the existing conditions to ensure assumptions made in the design of the proposed building are accurate. Slifer Square Repair Project/Covered Bridge
Phase II is ongoing. The Town of Vail has contracted with Icon Inc., of Gypsum to complete the Slifer Square Repair project. Slifer Square, located between the Vail Village parking structure and the Covered Bridge, is undergoing necessary repair projects. During construction, the in-town bus will be rerouted onto the frontage road and pedestrian traffic will be routed around the construction to the covered bridge to maintain access to businesses in Vail Village. Remaining work is scheduled for the fall Village construction season. Ski and Snowboard Club Vail Redevelopment, 598 Vail Valley Drive
Construction activity is contained within the construction fenced area. This is a redevelopment of the Ski and Snowboard Vail site to include a private and public club and multi-family residential dwelling units. The bike path on the south side of the project is currently closed; it scheduled to reopen by the end of November 2018, asphalt paving will not be completed until spring of 2019. Hill Building, 254 Bridge Street
Tower crane is scheduled to be removed on Oct. 31. Construction deliveries will continue to occur on Bridge Street for the project between 7 and 8:30 a.m. Oversize deliveries for the project on Upper Bridge Street will be coned off to keep pedestrians safe while material is delivered. Pedestrian traffic control will be provided. This is a major remodel of the building. Use of additional right-of-way requires submittal and approval of a public way permit. Vail Health Hospital East Enabling Work  
Site shoring and excavation of dirt is ongoing. Update on oversize vehicle traffic flow, pending permit approval: All oversize empty tractor trailers will enter from East Lionshead Circle, through the Dobson/Ice Arena Plaza bus route and enter the construction from the west; loaded trucks will then exit on West Meadow Drive through Vail Road. The excavating contractor has increased the amount of trucks in order to remove as much dirt as possible before the weather turns and the start of the ski season. Please exercise caution along South Frontage Road and West Meadow Drive near the construction project. Phase II of the Master Facility Plan includes the tear-down and replacement of the current east wing administration building and garage, replacing it with a new garage and new building to house new emergency and imaging departments, as well as a new lobby, central plant, tenant space and material management department. All hospital services will remain open and fully functional throughout the construction. To access the Emergency Department, use West Meadow Drive. Hospital patients and visitors should park in the hospital parking lot on South Frontage Road West. Patients and guests of the Medical Professional Building (US Bank) should park in the lot accessible by West Meadow Drive. Please see map. Contractor is G.E. Row House Unit 8, 303 Gore Creek Drive
Work consists of an interior and exterior remodel; work will be contained within property boundaries and construction fencing. Project completion is scheduled for fall of 2018. Contractor is Cuccia Construction, Guy Cuccia, 970-471-6456. Town of Vail contact is Leonard Sandoval, 970-390-4677.

Row House Units 9 & 10, 303 Gore Creek Drive
Single lane closures are scheduled for deliveries and concrete pours throughout the summer, fall and winter months; traffic control will be provided. Construction activity will be contained within property boundaries and construction fencing. Project consists of an interior and exterior remodel. Row House Units 11 & 12, 303 Gore Creek Drive
Single lane closures are scheduled for deliveries and concrete pours throughout the summer, fall and winter months; traffic control will be provided, Project consists of an interior/exterior remodel and addition. Lionshead

Lionshead Parking Structure Repairs
Beginning Monday, Oct. 8, Levels 1 and 2 of the Lionshead parking structure will be partially closed for structural repairs. The closures will continue for two weeks. Town of Vail contact is John King, 970- 479-2170.

I -70 Pedestrian Bridge Walkway to Lionshead, South Frontage Road
This project is underway. Work includes removal of 300 feet of existing asphalt and installing a heated concrete walkway from the pedestrian overpass Bridge east to the walkway between First Chair and Westwind buildings. Completion date is Nov. 1, 2018.  Work will require the pedestrian bridge to be closed for a few days, during demo and concrete pour days. When the pedestrian bridge is available, access will only be available to the stairs on West Lionshead Circle. Signage and traffic control will be provided. Battle Mountain/Lazier Parking Garage, 534 East Lionshead Cr.
Update: Completion of stairs and permanent site fence is pending before the project is considered complete. Work on the stairs between the parking lot and Vantage Point was scheduled to start on Saturday, Sept. 15. The proposed new project on the eastern portion of the lot is currently scheduled for spring of 2019. Lionsquare Lodge South Interior Renovation, 660 Lionshead Place
Storm drain work is underway; it will impact the heated sidewalk on Lionshead Place. Work should be completed within five days. Remaining work is currently contained within the site boundaries. The project includes interior upgrades to the existing conference room, including new celling finishes, room dividers, lighting and interior trim and parking lot improvements. Contractor is R.A. Vail Golf Course, New Starter Shack, 1655 Sunburst Dr.
The project consists of demolition of existing building and reconstruction of a new 1,453 sq. ft. building. Construction is underway with a completion date of June 2019. Contractor is R.A. Nelson & Associates, Matt Anderson. Vail Recreation District contact is Scott O’Connell, 970-477-5264.

Vail Golf Course, # 14 and #15 Bridge Replacements, 1755 Sunburst Dr.
The project consists of removal and replacement of #14 and #15 golf cart bridges. Construction is underway with a completion date of mid December 2018. Landscaping will be completed in the spring of 2019. Contractor is R.A. Nelson & Associates, Matt Anderson. Vail Recreation District contact is Scott O’Connell, 970-477-5264.

West Vail Sewer Main Improvements – West Vail South Frontage Road
Eagle River Water & Sanitation District installed new sewer main within the South Frontage Road West corridor. The project is critical to increase sewer main capacity in the West Vail area so ERWSD can accommodate peak sewer flows in the future. Phase 1 of the project was in S. Frontage Road West, between Stephens Park and Elliot Road in Intermountain, and is complete. Phase 2 is located east of the Exit 173 roundabout, on S. Frontage Road near Conoco and to the east. Work by Conoco is complete. This area remains a cone zone, with two-way traffic and occasional stops, due to the shoulder of the eastbound lane being used for construction staging while the project continues in an easement on the Casa del Sol Condominiums property. The recreation path is closed in this area; bicyclists and pedestrians are detoured through the site on the shoulder of the westbound lane. W. Gore Creek Dr. is open but not paved; use caution traveling on uneven surfaces. Final paving for W. Gore Creek Dr. and the recreation path is scheduled for mid-October, weather permitting. Sewer Main Improvements, Bridge Road and Recreation Path in East Vail
The Eagle River Water & Sanitation District, in cooperation with the town of Vail, installed new sewer main and manholes along Bridge Road, north of Gore Creek, and along the recreation path west of Bridge Road to near the I-70 East Vail interchange. Sewer main installation and connection is complete. Seeding and final closeout activities will occur this week. Eagle River Water & Sanitation District contact is Melissa Marts, 970-471-1329. Water Main Abandonment, Chamonix Lane / West Vail fire station
Eagle River Water & Sanitation District is upgrading an existing water main on Chamonix Lane that will increase water system reliability in the area. Work is scheduled to start Oct. 8 and should take several days, barring any unforeseen conditions. Chamonix Lane, above the West Vail fire station, will experience single lane closures on days when needed by construction. Traffic controllers will guide local traffic through the work area as necessary. Parking at nearby homes will be affected; residents are advised to use alternative parking on the shoulder of Chamonix Lane. I-70 East Vail Landscape Improvements
The Town of Vail has contracted with Rocky Mountain Custom Landscapes to install landscape improvements at the East Vail interchange. Irrigation and landscape wall installation is ongoing.  Trees and shrubs will be installed in the spring/summer 2019. This works follows the installation of water quality improvements at the interchange completed earlier this year. Town of Vail contact is Chad Salli, 970-479-2169.

Red Sandstone School Renovation, 551 North Frontage Road
The project includes the complete renovation of Red Sandstone Elementary School. Work includes removing the existing exterior finish material and installing new IECC compliant insulation and new exterior finishes, rearranging the existing school program and classrooms to allow for larger classrooms (to meet the current Eagle County School District standards). The new two-story addition along the south façade of the building will create a cafeteria, serving line, and secure vestibule all of which the school does not currently have. The second level of the addition will house the new library expanding the space to transform the library into a media center space as well. Demo and construction are underway, completion is scheduled for mid February 2019. Contractor is Haselden Construction, Justin Fahnestock, 303-549-8589.
 
Red Sandstone Elementary School Parking Garage, 551 North Frontage Road West
The pre-cast concrete continues. A 350-ton crane is on site to install the pre-cast concrete for the parking garage. Work within the CDOT right of way is ongoing, work includes new steps to the pedestrian overpass bridge, parking lot and bike path improvements. Completion of this work is early October 2018. Excavation, shoring and removal of dirt are ongoing. Access to the school and the gymnastics center will be maintained as a clear zone. The bus stop is open west bound only. This project has a completion date of Nov. 15, 2018. The Town of Vail and Eagle County Schools are jointly constructing a four-level, 160 space parking structure on the current Red Sandstone School site. The work will include extensive site work to establish a loop road around the parking structure to allow access to each level while at the same time provide a one-way loop road for school drop-off and pick up. Solar Vail Apartments, 501 N. Frontage Road West
Project is contained within the construction fence. Concrete footers and walls are ongoing. The existing employee housing located just east of the Vail Gymnastics Center will be demolished and replaced with a 4-story, 65-unit rental housing development for Sonnenalp Resorts.
