Utility work will be taking place along the South Frontage Road in Vail next week. A controlled Xcel Energy gas burn is scheduled for Monday, July 11 at the I-70 Vail underpass project site. Controlled flame may be visible during the operation. Motorists are asked to use caution in this area and to stay focused on the road.
A second controlled Xcel Energy gas burn is scheduled for Tuesday, July 12 along the South Frontage Road at Matterhorn Circle. Controlled flame may be visible during this operation, as well. Due to proximity to the roadway, Matterhorn Circle from the bridge over Gore Creek to the South Frontage Road will be closed. Vehicles will be rerouted to the west, to West Gore Creek Drive. Buses will be rerouted off of Matterhorn Circle and onto the South Frontage Road. Bus stops will move to the closest respective intersection with the South Frontage Road. Pedestrians will be rerouted onto the Gore Valley Trail adjacent to Matterhorn Circle in this area. Please use caution in this area.
This utility project includes lowering the high pressure gas main along the South Frontage Road between Donovan Park and the I-70 underpass project. The work near Donovan Park requires excavation across both of the travel lanes near Donovan Park and installation of a new above-ground valve set. This work will require single lane two-way alternating traffic along the South Frontage Road through mid-July. During daytime operations, traffic control and flaggers will be present. Night time single lane operations will be controlled by temporary construction traffic signals. Expect delays along this section of the South Frontage Road and use an alternate route when possible. Completion of the lowering and relocating of utilities is scheduled for late October 2016. Contractor is Snelson Companies Inc./Xcel Energy.
