Vail Fire Sponsors Student Internship with University of Bordeaux
Vail Fire and Emergency Services has entered into a unique partnership with the University of Bordeaux in Southern France to host an exchange student who is completing an internship in emergency services. The intern, Marion Bardeau, is completing her degree in health, safety and the environment. During the internship, Bardeau will live in the fire station and observe Vail’s methods of firefighting and delivery of other emergency services. In addition, she will be completing a data analysis project related to risk assessment and system performance for the department. This research will be incorporated in her capstone project. The internship began April 8 and will conclude June 14.

According to Fire Chief Mark Novak, “this is a great way to provide a unique opportunity to a future provider of emergency services, it also provides our members with the opportunity to learn about the European model of emergency services and exchange ideas.”

Vail Fire and Emergency Services is staffed by 35 full-time personnel and 6 seasonal personnel with an annual operating budget of $5.1 million. VFES is an all-risk fire department providing fire suppression, fire prevention, hazardous materials mitigation, rescue, wildfire mitigation and first response emergency medical care to the Town of Vail. VFES also responds to emergency incidents on Vail Pass between milemarker 182 and 190 through an intergovernmental agreement with Eagle County.
