North America's Premier International Resort Community
Vail Town Manager Greg Clifton has announced the hiring of Thomas ‘TJ’ Johnson as director of Information Technology. Johnson has 20 years of IT experience and has most recently served as senior IT manager for Vail Resorts, leading a team of 12 professionals.
Johnson was selected from a field of nearly 200 local and national applicants after taking part in a series of finalist interviews. His first day on the job will be in mid-March.
Town Manager Greg Clifton says Johnson was selected for his experience, his familiarity with the community, and most importantly, his leadership and management skills. “It was a very competitive recruitment process, with a very high level of interest by many qualified candidates,” he said. “Our need in this particular position, in addition to that of technical experience, is strong management abilities, considering our many projects and contracted services. TJ brings those qualities to the table and we are very pleased to have him join the Information Technology team.”
As IT director, Johnson will be responsible for leading innovative technology initiatives for the Vail community and town organization. This includes providing expert guidance and advice regarding the town’s technology along with its related programs, resources and services. He’ll oversee a staff of seven and will report directly to the assistant town manager. The annual operating budget for the department is $564,000 plus an additional $824,000 for annual capital maintenance and improvements.
Johnson says he’s excited to join the team at the Town of Vail. “I love the direction the Town has been heading in recent years, addressing community concerns like affordable housing, parking and environmental sustainability, and am looking forward to leading technology initiatives that can further these and other town goals.”
Johnson and his family have lived in the valley for 30 years. His contributions have extended throughout the valley and have included service as a member of the Eagle County Board of Education from 2009-2013 and a member of the board and executive committee of Ski and Snowboard Club Vail. He most recently became president of the Chamonix Vail Homeowners Association upon relocating to the West Vail neighborhood. TJ and wife Carol have three children, Anabel, Tess and Tommy.
